EP | Slutever: Almost Famous

Sassy DIY duo, Slutever (Rachel Gagliardi and Nicole Snyder), have unleashed a moody, raucous explosion of rebellion smothered in woozy feedback and restless guitar strokes in their great new six-track EP Almost Famous.

Opening track, Smother, just utterly reflects the aforementioned rowdiness as the first few seconds introduce a vindictive growl of churning guitar, shortly followed by the fast-paced, brilliantly stubborn melody and juxtaposing lyrics “kinda hungry but I’m anxious and I need something soft”. I Miss America, contrastingly, begins slower paced in that slightly oscillating Speedy Ortiz manner, bitterly shrieking “you’re already drunk / it’s 10 o’clock in the fucking morning”.

Track number three, Teen Mom, deceivingly beings more melodic and innocent-sounding, swooning the lyrics “I don’t love anyone the way that I love you”. However, that fickle, adolescent attitude erupts come the chorus as guitars and drums alike get caught in a tempest of brilliantly agitated, reverb-ed noise. You Asked For It, the following track, is basically a tantrum of noise, creating a solid wall of raucousness.

Penultimate track, Maggot, is just effortlessly revengeful as an ever-so-slightly enigmatic riff plays under a athem-esque melody which coldly and carelessly chants “hold your breath and say goodbye”. Finally, Open Wide, seems gentle and mellow in comparison to the rest of the EP due to the slower pace and euphonic vocals, yet solemnly heart-breaking lyrics such as “now that you’re older / things aren’t much better / it starts to look bad when you can’t pay your rent” maintain that painfully honest tang to Slutever’s raucous sound.

I think it’s safe to say that these girls rock, and I wish we were best friends. However, as that isn’t (yet) the case, you better keep an ear out because Slutever are onto something, and something rowdy.
